Love Yourself, Care for Others: Yoga for Caregivers | Tapas Yoga HK
Author -
Love yourself, care for others.
Thanks to Caritas Cheng Shing Fung Elderly Community Centre in Sham Shui Po for the invitation. This time I had the chance to practice yoga with a group of caregivers, giving them space and time to care for themselves and their own wellbeing.

Two moments really touched me:
I deliberately brought a singing bowl to share sound healing with everyone. One participant felt it conflicted with their beliefs and immediately said they wanted to leave with a stern face. I quickly switched to soft, soothing music and continued sharing yoga with sincerity and loving-kindness. By the end, that same participant told me their neck and shoulders felt much more relaxed, thanked me, and left with a smile. A smile and genuine care can warm others, and they truly feel it.
I noticed most participants were elderly. To help everyone participate better, I asked if anyone needed me to read the rainbow card aloud near their ear. For one grandmother in particular, I read the opening and closing messages three times into her better ear. She was deeply moved. One small gesture can brighten someone's entire day.

What are the benefits of yoga for caregivers?
Stress Relief and Relaxation Starting with simple breathing exercises promotes mental relaxation and reduces daily stress and emotional burden.
Improved Physical Flexibility Caregiving often involves repetitive physical movements. Yoga builds flexibility and strength while reducing injury risk.
Self-Affirmation Practice Through practicing self-affirmation statements in class, caregivers can build confidence and remind themselves they deserve to be cared for, strengthening their inner resilience.

We all play different roles and carry different responsibilities in society. According to unofficial statistics, one in two people is a caregiver. Amid busy lives, remember to give yourself some time for self-care!
We welcome other organizations to collaborate and bring yoga to more people in the community, promoting wellness together!
