When we speak of yoga and freedom, we naturally think of the word "yoga" itself - meaning "union" or "to yoke." The purpose of yoga is to bring harmony to mind, body, and spirit, and freedom is the expression of this goal. It's not merely external comfort or relaxation, but inner peace and self-acceptance - a state of non-attachment.
Yoga is not just exercise - it's a practice that brings us back to inner peace.
The Yoga Sutras state: "Yoga is the cessation of the fluctuations of the mind." This means yoga's true aim is to stop our minds from being disturbed by external waves, achieving inner stillness. Only in this state can we truly experience freedom.
However, freedom doesn't happen overnight - it requires consistent practice. As the Yoga Sutras say: "Practice becomes firmly grounded when pursued for a long time, without interruption, with devotion." Stability and ease are the mental states we pursue in yoga practice. Whether in asana practice or meditation, stability and relaxation form our foundation.
Ashtanga yoga emphasizes the coordination of breath and movement, helping us return to the present moment, reducing mental clutter, and establishing a deep connection with our bodies. This is the pathway to freedom.
