Yoga Sutra 1.2 "Yogas citta-vritti-nirodhah"
This translates to "Yoga is stilling the fluctuations of the mind." This statement can be understood from both philosophical and practical perspectives.
1. Yoga and Mental Fluctuations
One of yoga's core goals is to help us achieve "mental stillness" or "self-awareness." According to the Yoga Sutras, yoga is defined as "stilling the fluctuations of the mind," meaning our thoughts, emotions, and reactions (the fluctuations of consciousness) rise and fall like ocean waves, throwing our inner world into chaos and instability. Yoga, through various practices, calms these fluctuations, bringing stability and tranquility to our minds.
2. Mental Fluctuations in Practice
On a practical level, yoga includes asanas (postures), pranayama (breath control), and meditation. These techniques help relax body and mind, freeing us from daily mental busyness and emotional turbulence. Through consistent practice, yoga helps us release excessive thought patterns, desires, and emotional reactions, returning the mind to a state of "clear stillness" like a calm lake.
In summary, "Yoga is stilling the fluctuations of the mind" means that one of yoga's goals is to help us break free from internal mental fluctuations, guiding our minds toward a stable, peaceful state.
