Flexibility is one reason many people start yoga, but it's actually an outcome of practice, not a prerequisite. You don't need to be "flexible" to start yoga — quite the opposite, yoga can help precisely because your body is tight. Everyone's body structure differs, as does flexibility. What matters is comparing yourself to yesterday, not to others.

Improving flexibility is a gradual process requiring consistent, gentle practice. Rushing actually risks muscle or ligament injury. When you feel moderate stretch sensation, maintain breathing, relax opposing muscles, and let your body gradually open within a comfortable range.

Beyond asana practice, daily posture habits also affect flexibility. Prolonged sitting tightens hips and shoulders. Regularly getting up to move and doing simple stretches effectively maintains body mobility. At Tapas Yoga, our stretch and Yin yoga classes are especially suited for students wanting to improve flexibility.
