Backbend poses open the front body—chest, abdomen, hip flexors—areas that are often contracted in daily life. For those who work at desks, backbends effectively counter hunching, improve posture, and bring feelings of invigoration and energy.

Backbends require careful approach. Many beginners concentrate pressure in the lower back, causing discomfort or injury. Correct backbends should come from even extension of the entire spine, especially opening the upper back and chest. Proper warm-up, strong core support, and progressive practice are all important.

Starting from simple Cobra, gradually progress to Wheel and Camel and other deep backbends. Every level of backbend has value—no need to rush toward the deepest version. In Tapas Yoga's backbend workshops, you'll learn techniques and methods for safely deepening backbends.
