Protect Your Knees by Strengthening Your Quadriceps

Your quadriceps are responsible for many daily activities. Standing up, walking, running, and jumping all depend on this important muscle group!

The quadriceps sit on the front of your thigh and consist of four muscles: rectus femoris, vastus lateralis, vastus medialis, and vastus intermedius. When the quadriceps contract, they pull on the tendons above your kneecap to straighten your knee. Strengthening your front thigh (quadriceps) can reduce knee pain and improve knee joint stability.

Protect Your Knees: Strengthen Your Quadriceps with Yoga

Practice Steps

  1. Sit on a yoga mat or flat surface with legs extended and feet flexed.
  2. Place a yoga block to the right of your foot.
  3. Cross your arms over your chest, lengthen your spine, lift your chest, engage your core, and try not to lean back.
  4. Lift your right leg off the ground and slowly sweep it from left to right over the top of the yoga block, then slowly sweep it back from right to left over the block.
  5. While not touching the yoga block, hover your right leg over its top and even give a slight kick upward.

Switch to left leg and repeat steps 1-5, placing the yoga block to the left of your foot. This time sweep the left leg from right to left to open.

Practice Tips

  • The working leg should not touch the yoga block throughout the exercise!
  • Focus your awareness on engaging the front of your thigh.
  • The slower you sweep, the more your thighs will burn!
  • Keep your hands off the ground throughout the exercise!

Note: If you're engaging your lower back incorrectly and feel discomfort, stop and try practicing with your back against a wall instead.

Work at your own pace, practice slowly, no rush.
