Knee Pain When Kneeling? 4 Simple Methods to Reduce Joint Pressure | Tapas Yoga HK
Author -
Kneeling (or seiza) is a common sitting posture in yoga classes and daily life, but for many people it can be challenging - knee pain, numb feet, and difficulty staying still.
This article explains why kneeling puts pressure on the knee joints, and 4 methods using props to reduce discomfort.
Solutions for Knee Pain When Kneeling
Kneeling (similar to "seiza," though they differ in whether the ankles are raised and toes grounded) can reduce spinal pressure, but it also increases pressure on the knees!
When kneeling, the knee joint bends at a larger angle, and the weight of the upper body presses on the knees, ankles, and tops of the feet, increasing pressure on these areas. This is especially unsuitable for those with knee joint or foot injuries.
Prolonged kneeling also affects blood circulation, causing numbness in the feet.
Even so, some occasions (like tea ceremony) still require kneeling or seiza. To help you feel more comfortable in these situations, here are 4 simple tips:
4 Methods to Reduce Knee Pressure When Kneeling
Cushion Under the Knees Place a soft cushion under your knees to relieve pressure on the knee joints.
Cushion Behind the Knees Placing a cushion behind your knees can reduce joint pressure and maintain blood flow.
Cushion Under the Feet A cushion under the ankles or tops of the feet helps support the feet and reduce pressure.
Block Under the Hips Placing a yoga block under your hips slightly elevates your body, reducing pressure on the knees.
Important Notes:
- It's recommended to change positions every 10-15 minutes to avoid staying in one posture for too long.
- If you need to sit for extended periods, leaning your back against a wall provides additional support.
