Chakra Basics: Understanding the Root Chakra (Muladhara) | Tapas Yoga HK
Author -
In the yoga tradition, the human body has seven main energy centers called chakras. The root chakra is the first chakra, located at the base of the spine, serving as the foundation for all energy.
Understanding chakras isn't mysticism. It's a way to recognize the mind-body connection. When we describe someone as "ungrounded" or "unstable," we're actually describing an imbalanced root chakra.
Chakra Chapter 1: Root Chakra (Muladhara)
In the yoga world, energy (prana) flows through channels called nadis throughout our body. We have three main nadis: the central channel (sushumna), left channel (ida), and right channel (pingala).
Chakras are where these nadis converge. We have seven main chakras: 1) Root, 2) Sacral, 3) Solar Plexus, 4) Heart, 5) Throat, 6) Third Eye, and 7) Crown.
Yoga practice (including but not limited to asanas and pranayama) helps cleanse and balance the nadis, chakras, and prana.

First Chakra: Root Chakra (Muladhara)
Element: Earth
Expression: Grounding, stability, foundation, solidity
Body Parts: Primarily feet and legs
Quality: Roots ground down, pressing through the legs and soles of feet, then expanding outward. At the same time, grounded roots draw up nutrients and water, nourishing the rest of the body through the legs.
Imbalance: Deficiency makes one ungrounded. Excess makes one heavy and sluggish. Only a balanced root chakra demonstrates stability.
Yoga Poses for Root Chakra Balance
Recommended Poses:
- Downward Facing Dog
- Cobra
- Chair Pose
- Bridge Pose
- Tree Pose
- Child's Pose
Practice Tips:
During your next practice, try bringing awareness to your feet. When standing, feel your feet pressing down and out into the ground. Notice how your feet grip the floor firmly, providing a sense of solidity throughout your body. Imagine your roots (feet) reaching through the earth, anchoring firmly.
