Ashtanga LED Class & Conference 2024 Part 2 Summary
Ashtanga Yoga is a form of Hatha Yoga. For what makes Ashtanga special, see Part 1 Summary.
The Mysore Practice Method
Lesson 4 - Mysore Style

@yoga.tung introduced the traditional Pattabhi Jois Mysore style teaching method. Mysore style is a self-directed practice where the teacher provides individual guidance to each student. The teacher also explained that the Primary Series consists entirely of active stretching, with each movement interconnected.
When studying Ashtanga Yoga in India, the teacher practices six days per week. We all understand that maintaining a six-day weekly practice is challenging (except for Moon Days and Lady's Days). The teacher suggests that besides practicing Mysore at the studio together, you can also practice Mysore at home. Start with daily Sun Salutations A & B, then gradually add more.
Whether you can maintain certain habits depends simply on whether you want to maintain them.
"Yoga is 99% practice and 1% theory." - Sri K. Pattabhi Jois
The Meaning of Guru
Lesson 5 - Guru

Ashtanga Yoga was founded by Sri K. Pattabhi Jois (1915-2009) when he established the Ashtanga Yoga Research Institute in 1948. Sri K. Pattabhi Jois's successor is his grandson, Paramaguru Shri R. Sharath Jois. After Sri K. Pattabhi Jois passed away in 2009, Sharath took on the responsibility of continuing the Ashtanga Yoga lineage.
Sadly, Sharath Jois recently passed away (Monday, November 11, 2024, US time) in Virginia, USA. According to the NY Times, he had been conducting a workshop at the University of Virginia that week and passed away while hiking nearby.
Yoga Tung introduced a Sanskrit term at the November conference: Guru. "Gu" means "darkness" and "Ru" means "remover." Guru therefore means "remover of darkness."
Yoga Practice and Inner Awakening
Yoga is a deeply personal practice. From when we first encountered yoga to maintaining a consistent practice, integrating yoga into our lives, and whether we listen to and absorb our teacher's guidance - these are all our own choices and decisions.
A good yoga seed planted in the heart only waits for us to nurture it. Given time, it will sprout.
Follow your heart. Follow your pace. Follow your journey.
