Bakasana (Crow Pose): Your Complete Guide

Bakasana, commonly known as Crow Pose, is one of the first arm balances most yoga practitioners learn. While it may look intimidating at first, with proper technique and consistent practice, anyone can achieve this pose.

Why Practice Bakasana?

  • Builds core strength: Your abdominal muscles work overtime to keep your hips lifted
  • Improves balance: Learning to shift your weight forward is a key skill
  • Develops arm strength: Your wrists and arms become stronger
  • Boosts confidence: Achieving your first arm balance is incredibly rewarding

4 Key Techniques for Success

1. Hand Placement

Place your hands shoulder-width apart with fingers spread wide. Press through all four corners of your palms. This creates a stable foundation.

2. Core Engagement

Before lifting off, draw your navel toward your spine. Keep your core engaged throughout the entire pose. Think of hugging your knees toward your armpits.

3. Gaze Forward

Where you look matters! Keep your gaze about a foot in front of your hands. Looking down makes you more likely to tip forward.

4. Shift Your Weight

The key to lifting off is shifting your weight forward until your feet naturally become light. Start by lifting just one foot at a time.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Placing hands too close together
  • Looking down at the floor
  • Not engaging the core
  • Rushing the weight shift

Practice Tips

Start with blocks under your feet if needed. Practice near a wall or with a pillow in front of you. Remember, falling is part of learning!
